Microsoft "believes in the magic software unlocks..and the creative individuals who make that software all that it can be". Microsoft is teaming with OCAD to drive that innovation in Canada. Will start with devices like Surface (table-top computing). They are going to give them Surface tech and work with a company to teach them how to use it.

OCAD: "Our designers and artists are incredibly cross-disciplinary" They are going to open their doors to the greater business community to work with the faculty, students.

Grew up in Pittsburgh. Remembers hearing that Jesus said "The poor will always be with us. "
by Jonathan Keebler at 4/7/2009 3:10:55 PM
Also heard: "What you do to the least of these you do unto me." = made her feel powerful
by Jonathan Keebler at 4/7/2009 3:12:04 PM
"Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, hearing about poverty in Sunday school, the poor are people who need things, and we're the people that give them things. Images of people always wanting things from me, following me around. The idea in Sunday school that we could help god. This helped me think about poverty."

Most pictures of images of poor would make her really sad (photos of kids with extended bellies, etc). And that was the message from the non-profits
by Jonathan Keebler at 4/7/2009 3:12:39 PM
Nonprofit marketing is about making people feel sad, and make that go away by giving money.
by remarkk at 4/7/2009 3:13:00 PM
She went on a highschool trip, and put a name/face on all these ppl. Everyday after she got home, that feeling of sadness slowly went away = "I need to figure this out"

After hearing a talk about micro-credit, quit her job and moved to East Africa. Micro-finance = tailored to the needs of those living on a few dollars a day.
by Jonathan Keebler at 4/7/2009 3:16:27 PM
Listened to Dr Muhammad Yunus: Didn't talk about how sad we should feel for these ppl, talked about how these are just interesting ppl that need capital.

Listening to East African stories, most ppl just wanted a small loan

They lend around $67M a year now! Partners all over the world now.
by Jonathan Keebler at 4/7/2009 3:20:01 PM
What started it for her: seeing a person in context = it wasn't all bad, there's was hope/promise. That person was working really hard, and she wanted to frame their stories in that context
by Jonathan Keebler at 4/7/2009 3:20:56 PM
500K lenders from around the world, doing lending every day. Provide local partners a source of 0% debt capital who administer the loans

Zero percent capital got the attention of local partners. "Hey, lets do this cool thing together" - less so.
by remarkk at 4/7/2009 3:22:36 PM
Primay focus was not amassing a huge fun of $$, building a big MFI (microfinancing institution) network. Did not take huge sums of money, disconnected from the ppl they are helping.

Stay Open - what does this mean? Nonprofits are very closed, very possessive of their brand. Kiva is about co-creation.
